William Welch passed away quietly in the company of his family on Sunday, December 25, 2005, at Ray Hickey Hospice in Vancouver, WA. Bill was born in Marietta, WA on May 21, 1917, and lived in the Bellingham area during his youth. His family later moved to Kalama, WA where he attended high school and graduated in 1936. In April 1941 he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Merz. Bill joined the Navy in 1943, but was hospitalized with a serious ailment for 7 months, and was given a medical discharge in May 1944. Upon returning home, Bill and Virginia lived in the Longview area, then settled again in Kalama, where they made their home. For the next 10 years, Bill was Kalama's milkman. Later he was employed by the Cowlitz County Road District and retired after 30 years. Bill was an avid reader, loved hunting and fishing in his early life, but turned to golf and traveling in his later years. He and his wife spent 15 winters in the California sun with their friends during their retirement. In 2002, Bill and Virginia moved from Kalama to a condo in Ridgefield, WA to be closer to their children. Bill was a devoted family man to his wife of 64 years and their three daughters, and they will all miss him greatly. Survivors include, wife Virginia; daughters; Penny Buck, Becky Sowders and Cindy Jones; grandchildren, Marcus Dean Buck, Timmothy Sowders and Lily Jones; two great grandchildren, Zoee and William; and a brother, James Welch and sister, Alice Rice. The public is invited to a 1:00 pm memorial service on January 7, 2006 at Kalama Methodist Church. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, December 28, 2005 at the Kalama Cemetery.
