For her first 11 years she lived on a ranch founded by her grandfather located on Swauk Creek, a fertile valley on which was founded the first gold discovery in the state of Washington. The ranch was dedicated to farming and logging. Agnes grew up with farming and agriculture, including horses, and she rode her horse about three miles to Ballard School which was located on the Swauk Prairie. That ranch is now known as the Hidden Valley Guest Ranch. When she was 11 years old, she moved to Kelso and lived with her aunt and uncle, Bill and Mary Jane Nicholson, where she attended Kelso High and graduated in 1936. She attended beauty school and became a beauty operator. On February 13, 1941, she married her high school sweetheart, Dee Wilma, a Fibre employee. They immediately started construction of a home in Kelso, moved in and started producing kids, Gail in August 1943, Alan in March of 1945, and Don in April of 1949. It became obvious that their home was too small and they started building a larger home in 1949 on West Castleman in Longview. They occupied that home in 1951 and Mary Kay was born in March of 1960, followed by Lucille in April of 1964. Agnes was a beautiful mother. She took an interest in everything her kids did and had a subtle way of guiding them through life. Agnes and Dee gave their kids a great love of nature and an appreciation for the beauty in everything around them. When the kids started moving out, Agnes and Dee moved into Peardale condos, where they lived for 18 years. Agnes had many great friends and was a wonderful cook. She made entertaining look easy. Meals would often include some sort of fish, clams, oysters, shrimp or berries that had been gathered on one of many family outings. Agnes was at home in the water and spent a lot of time swimming at the family cabin on the Toutle River. Agnes and Dee had many wonderful trips to most parts of the USA, Alaska and Canada, through the Caribbean Sea, the Panama Canal, the Mississippi River, the Hawaiian Island, and the San Juan Islands. They sailed the Indian Ocean to observe Hailey's Comet in 1986. They explored Sri Lanka, the Seychelle Islands, visited Thailand, Burma, the Andaman Islands and the Maldive Islands. They participated in many Elderhostels, including various places in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Agnes was very involved in community affairs including Girl Scouts, PTA, PEO, and was a member of the Kelso Methodist Church for 60 years. She and Dee were part of a group of four couples who initiated the local square dancing activities in the late forties. They were also involved in the Harmony Club for forty years. Agnes will be greatly missed for her sweet easy going personality and easy smile. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 13th at 1:30 p.m. at the Kelso First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Dahl- McVicker Funeral Home.
