Virginia Stith Young, 81, of Longview, Washington died on Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Hospice Care Center surrounded by her family. She was born on September 21, 1924 in Portland, Oregon to Rose and Leslie Stith. The Stiths came to Longview in 1923 as part of the team of Long Bell Lumber Company executives who helped R.A. Long found the city. Her father presided over the complicated financing of Longview. Virginia's family resided in the second home built in Longview. As a child, Virginia attended Kessler School. Her family then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she graduated from high school in 1942. In 1946 she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Management from Iowa State University where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Following college, Virginia spent two years flying as an airline stewardess for Mid-Continent/Braniff Airlines. In 1947 she married Jerry A. Houston, a former Longview attorney. Together they had three daughters; Nancy Houston Miller of Los Altos, California, Suzanne Houston Bierlein of Castle Rock, Washington, and Martha Houston who preceded her in death. They later divorced and in 1971 she married Ralph L. Young, her present and devoted husband of 34 years. Virginia was an active member of the Longview community and worked for ten years as a social worker, retiring in 1981. She volunteered for the St. John Hospital Auxiliary and the Columbia Theater Guild and was a member of the PEO Sisterhood. As a long-time member of the Longview Community Church, Virginia enjoyed being part of the Fidelity Church Circle. She was an avid antique collector and she and Ralph loved traveling the world. In addition to her husband Ralph and two daughters Nancy and Suzanne, she is survived by her sister Marjorie Curry of Bedford, Texas; her son-in-laws William J. Miller and James Bierlein and three grand children, Andrew Miller, Lucas Bierlein and Tom Bierlein. The family invites friends to attend a memorial service in her honor on Friday, March 17, 2006 at 4:00p.m. at the Gebert Chapel of the Longview Community Church. Donations may be made to Community Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA. A private family graveside service will be held at Longview Memorial Park on Friday preceding the memorial.
