Targus, 75, a longtime Grays Harbor resident, died Friday, July 30, 1993, at a Tacoma hospital. He was born March 31, 1918, in Pe Ell, Wash. He grew up and attended school in Pe Ell and was graduated from Pe Ell High School in 1938. He attended Western Washington State College, and as a football player there was named a Little All American. He worked for the U.S. Park Service as a park ranger at Mount Rainier while in college and after graduation. Mr. Targus served with the Coast Guard during World War II, then came to the Grays Harbor area and was employed at Rayonier for several years. He then was employed for 28 years by Mayr Brothers Logging Company, where he was the log yard foreman. He retired in 1983. Mr. Targus had lived in Ocean Shores since the early 1970s. He was a member of the Polish Club had served as its president for 10 years. He also was a member of the Polish National Alliance, the Aberdeen Eagles Aerie No. 24 and the Ocean Shores Elks Lodge No. 2581. Mr. Targus enjoyed sporting events and for numerous years he had refereed area basketball and football games. He was an outdoorsman, an avid fisherman who enjoyed giving his catch to family and friends and also enjoyed clam digging. Surviving Mr. Targus are his wife Betty L., of the family home in Ocean Shores; two sons, Stanley and Tom, both of Olympia; two daughters, Joyce Targus and Nancy Ketola, both of Olympia; a stepson, Bob McManus of Oakland, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Marla Parnell of Hoquiam; three sisters, Sylvia Kohout, Helen Craig, and Josephine Jastad, all of Tacoma; also seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Mr. Targus will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug., 4, in Ocean Shores Elks Lodge. The family suggests memorial donations may be made to Kamp Kawanis, P.O.
