J. Clarke Publishing Company RALPH W. GARHART, whose labors as a serologist and bacteriologist have gained for him an enviable reputation in the medical circles of Portland, is a man of thorough education and wide practical experience and in his especial field of practice has no superior in the Columbia River valley. Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1887, he received his early education in the public and high schools of that city and later attended medical college in Toledo, Ohio, after which he went to Germany, where he spent two and a half years in laboratory work. On his return to this country he served in the Rhode Island General Hospital, the Muhlenburg Hospital in New Jersey and the Wilhard Park Laboratory in New York. In 1919 he went to Seattle, Washington, where he was assistant pathologist to his brother until 1925, when he came to Portland and was for awhile associated with Dr. Sternberg. In that year he established his present laboratory, and also accepted charge of the city board of health laboratory. He has been eminently successful in his laboratory work, his practice having grown to an extent that has caused him to recently establish another laboratory in East Portland. He covers every phase of laboratory work, including Wasserman serology, and has been of invaluable aid to the medical practitioners of this city and vicinity, who hold him in high esteem for his ability and attainments. In 1918 Mr. Garhart was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Monteith, who was born in Newark, New Jersey, acquired a good education and is a graduate nurse. To them have been born two children, Jean Neville, aged nine years, and Ralph W., Jr., aged six years. Mr. Garhart is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Multnomah Anglers Club, the American Bacteriological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Be is a man of strong personality and agreeable manner, is true to his ideals, and throughout the range of his acquaintance commands the sincere respect of his associates and those who know of his accomplishments.
