Jacob Mapel or Maple was one of the original donation settlers at Van Asselt, later Duwamish, later Georgetown, now the industrial area of south Seattle. His son Samuel Adams Mapel or Maple was one of eleven children born of Jacob's marriage to Catherine Jane Adams, at Guernsey County, Ohio. Jacob died at Meeker (now Kent), and Samuel died at Duwamish, within four years of each other. The community burying ground (named variously, but generally called Comet Lodge) was becoming established on the hill above Georgetown and they were buried there. The remains of Jacob and Samuel Maple, father and son, were disinterred from the Comet Lodge Cemetery abt 1939 by their descendants, cremated, and returned to the land which was their original donation claim. For a decade the ashes were in a display cabinet inside the lobby of the King County Airport terminal. However, when the terminal was converted to an administration building the ashes were retired to a concrete vault in the parking lot. Marked by descendants in 1950, and registered as a county historic landmark for the centennial of the settling of Seattle, the graves site is a local curiosity. Samuel Maple has an abandoned marker still in place at Comet Lodge. Surname spelling varies in the contemporary records but is given as shown on the marker.
