All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/wa/wafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Loretta-Marie Dimond genehisthome1@comcast.net February 13, 2008, 8:26 pm Abstracted By: Loretta-Marie Dimond The White Church, Seattle's first house of worship, was a frame Methodist Episcopal church erected next to an existing cabin converted to parsonage, on land donated from the claim of Carson Boren, at the SE corner of Second and Columbia Streets; it was dedicated on 12 May 1855 and stood as a church for about eleven years, then became progressively a gambling hall, a saloon, a restaurant, and a theatre; inexplicably, the site was spared by the Great Seattle Fire of 6 Jun 1889, although the building just to the south of it was consumed; the site has been redeveloped several times, and is presently occupied by a lobby annex built for the Seattle-First National Bank's Dexter Horton Building, leased by the United Way of King County; the site of the successor church, of the Free Methodist denomination and first built in 1865, is three blocks to the east; all known graves were relocated to the Depot Street Cemetery in the late 1860s-early 1870s. Possible interments include those listed below, and the present locations of the graves is identified when known.
