He served in combat during World War II in Normandy, North Africa, Italy and Germany. He was also involved with reacquiring German stolen war treasures in the salt mines where they had been hidden. He earned 1 purple heart, 2 bronze stars and numerous other awards. He was preceded in death by son Gary (1977) and his wife Charlotte (1993). He is survived by his brother Hank Burns, son Mark Burns and daughter-in-law Beverly Burns.
