During World War II he was interned in a Japanese resident camp by the US government. He married Mary in 1945, who preceded him in death in 2008. He enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Military Intelligence Service and under General MacArthur during the post-war occupation of Japan. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2013 along with other Nisei World War II veterans who served in the Military Intelligence Service. He was the Dean of the School of Education at the University of Washington from 1979 until his retirement in 1988. He is survived by one daughter, two sisters.
