Robert was born in Seattle on July 23, 1928 to Thomas and Dorothy Downing.

After 57 years of marriage he was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, in 
2013.

He is survived by their children Douglas (Lori) and Marlys Chandler (Neil); by 
his sisters Ruth Roberts (Bill), Esther Lassen (Marvin) and Grace Hundtoft, 
and brother Arthur.
