Alex was born in Hungary on October 13, 1919, emigrating to the United 
States with his family when he was nine.

In 1942 he joined the US Army Air Corps rising to the rank of Major in the 
Civil Affairs Division of occupied Germany (Bavaria) working on the de-
Nazification of schools, hospitals, churches and voluntary organizations.

He married Betty Sue Davidson on May 9, 1943.

He taught political science at the University of Washington from 1950 until 
1982, when he retired.

He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Erika Gottfried and son-in-law 
Steven Fischler.
