At the start of World War II he was placed in an internment camp in Tule Lake, CA. He was reunited with his family at the Minidoka, ID camp. Once released from the camp, he served 3 years with the Military Intelligence Service as part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, being awarded the WWII Victory Medal and a Congressional Medal of Honor. He married Trude Hodge (Kraft) who was a widowed mother of five children in 1959. He and Trude had 2 additional children. He was preceded in death by his wife Trude, brothers Aki, Ken, Paul, and George; and his sisters Nobu and Rae. Surviving children are Lorene Hayashi (Leo), Gordon Hayashi, Evelyn Hodge, Anita (Lloyd)Purdy, Rosemary (Jean) Lefor, Trudy (John) Hodge and second wife, Lisa.
