In 1941 Jim joined the National Guard. In 1942 he joined the US Army Air Force flying a B-24 heavy bomber and transferred to England to help in the war effort. He bailed out over Holland during his fourth mission and evaded the Germans for five months with the help of the Dutch Resistance in Rotterdam. He eventually was caught and spent time in the POW camp Stalag Luft III. On April 29, 1945 he, along with 130,000 other allies was liberated by General Patton's 14th Armored division. Upon returning to the US he joined the US Air Force and served during the Korean War and throughout the Cold War, retiring in 1966. He is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters Kerry Radley, Leslie Saville and Tina Soleim, sons Jim, Kevin and Brian.
