He joined the Norwegian Free Forces during World War II. He married Ruth Louise Ursin on June 27, 1953. Roald studied theology and was ordained in Norway in 1954. He was involved with the Norwegian Seamen's Mission in Australia, France and the US. Beginning in 1972 he served Lutheran congregations in New York, Chicago and Seattle. In 1984 he earned a Doctorate of Theology from Oslo University. He is survived by his wife Ruth, and children Evelyn, Jeanette (John) and Marianne (Chuck). He was preceded in death by his son Olaf.
