Richard was born March 13, 1927 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

He served in the US Navy from 1945-46, as a second-class petty officer, serving
on the Bikini Atoll during the fourth and fifth atom bomb tests.

He graduated from the University of Washington Medical school in 1954.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Marilyn; children David and Adele Layton,
Deborah Layton, John and Chris Layton; Larry and Shuling Smith, Eleanor Smith
and Charles Jaffe.
