James was born Niovember 1, 1932 to Frank and Leota McDermott in New Mexico.

He served in the Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

In 1957 he married W. Eileen Willamson and they had seven children Leanne 
Swanson, Julie Dye, Lance McDermott (Darlene), Connie Kirby (Douglas), 
Melinda Hulse (Don), Darrin McDermott (Annette), Justin Hargis-McDermott 
(Ed).

Later he married Marge Lee Blyth.
