Richard was born April 8, 1929 to Peter and Ethel (Ryan) Nies in Bowdie, S. Dakota.

He joined the Air Force where he achieved the rank of 2nd lieutenant and
continued in the Air Force Reserve until discharge in 1961.

Richard married Thelma Combs on July 15, 1955 in Seattle, WA.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years Thelma; children Ronald Nies,
Robert Nies and Nancy Griese (Rocky); and his brother George Nies.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
