Lawrence was born in Walsenburg, CO on June 14, 1917 to Charles H. Phipps and 
Elizabeth J. Phipps.

He married Marie on February 24, 1939, who preceded him in death.

He and Marie had five children Larry, Mary, Carol, Caren and Joanne.
