He joined the Navy shortly after the combing on Pearl Harbor, serving as a Gun Captain on the USS Tennessee, seeing action throughout the Pacific. He married Ruth Callaway in 1947. He was on the Cabinet for Governor Dan Evans and served as the Commissioner of Employment Security, Director of Public Assistance and as the First Secretary of the Department of Social and Health Services for the State of Washington. He is survived by their children son Richard (Kay); son David (Arlene); daughter Leslie Kelly (Jim); son Geoff and Daughter-in-law Laura. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruthie. They had been married 57 years at the time of her death.
