Carnot was born in 1933 in Creston Iowa to Carnot and Lillian Thomas.

After graduating from Northwestern University in the ROTC he served four years 
as a Naval Officer.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Carol, and his five children:  Mary E. 
Bannister (David), Margo Lindberg (Alan), Suzanne, C.J., and Rich; and 
sisters-in-law Marjorie and Diana Carmody.
