Carrie Mae Arterberry was born on October 27,1913, in Clinton County, Iowa, to Thomas "Tom" and Mary Mane (Merrick) Arterberry. As she grew up, she helped her mother deliver her three brothers as well as others, in her adult life. The family would migrate from Iowa to Oklahoma working the fields of crops, and back again to Iowa where they lived in Jackson County, Iowa. Carrie Mae married Arthur "Art" Burnett Varner on February 6, 1929. Carrie Mae and Art had only one child, a daughter, named Betty Lou, born May 31, 1930, in Clinton, Iowa. Betty Lou married Carl E. Massey, Sr. on November 8,1947 in Camanche. They had six grandchildren for Carrie Mae and Art. In 1961 Carl and Betty Lou moved those grandchildren to the state of Washington and Art and Carrie moved to Washington on a few occasions to be near their daughter and grandchildren, always returning to Jackson County, whether in Maquoketa or Baldwin. Carrie Mae loved her family and friends. She loved anning food, baking bread and cooking. She loved to garden, whether it was a flower garden or food garden. She loved to watch old westerns and The Price Is Right. She loved Bluegrass Music, Willie Nelson, whom she called "Pee Wee" Nelson. She also loved to fish. She loved her popcorn. She had many friends and neighbors who would look in on her, now and then, and that was appreciated since her grandchildren lived far away. Her grandchildren would like to thank all of those who were there for her. In 1979, she lost her daughter, Betty Lou, who died in Washington State on March 20, 1979. Carrie did her best to fill in for her daughter as mother/grandmother to those six grandchildren She did a very good job in doing that. In 1992, she lost her husband, Arthur and in 1994 she moved to Washington state to be near the grown grandchildren and her great- grandchildren. In 1996, she moved back to Iowa because the weather was too damp for her in Washington state. She wanted to be buried in Iowa, next to her husband of 63 years.
