During World War II he was imprisoned by the German-allied Croatian and Italian forces. He married Matilde Rus in Rome in 1950. They emigrated to the US in 1955. She died in 2003. He had a PhD in Geography and taught at a number of universities including the University of Washington. Due to his anti-communist views he was denied entry to Yugoslavia until 1991 when it became an independent country again, after which time he visited regularly. He is survived by his son Peter (New York) where he lived for several years until moving to Slovenia in 2014 where he died. He is also survived by daughter Maria and son Marko.
