Brownsville, Kitsap.CO ===================================================== Submission by: Ruth Blakeslee, 1131 NE Beaumont Ln, Bremerton WA 98311, 206.679.5077 Submission date: April 2004 Transcription source: historical information provided by Kitsap County Historical Society http://www.waynes.net/kchsm/; specifically from a school history project paper which culminated in a Central Kitsap Journal article-June 25, 1975, page 16, written by Lisetta Lindstrom. According to this article the names found listed below are the only ones contributed by cemetery records and local residents although some believe that as many as 50 Indians and 50 whites are buried there. Cemetery, Bremerton, Kitsap County, Washington (other names): Gilberton Cemetery, Laurel Heights Cemetery Address: no official address; please see driving directions Owner: original owner was Andrew Nelson who came to Brownsville area about 1875 & married a full-blooded Suquamish Indian. In 1903 it was deeded to neighbors who were trustees of the Brownsville Cemetery Association, but the cemetery may have been used as early as 1870. Eventually Andrea MacDonald and the Port Orchard-based Washington State Cemetery Association would like to take it over. Records indicate that when the surrounding area was developed in the 1960's there was bull-dozing damage to easement and possibly gravesites. There may also be easement restriction from unauthorized improvements by adjoining property owners. Driving directions & size: From Bremerton, WA, drive North on Illahee Rd NE, Turn left on Roanoke Rd into residential development. Cemetery property is from about 214 ft to 442 ft on the right hand side of the road & goes about 100 ft deep (adjacent lot was deeded for church purposes but apparently never had a church built).
