All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************ Contributed by: Shelli Steedman 4/20/2007 Toppenish-Carl Lester McEwen, 85, of Toppenish, died Sunday, January 31, 1988 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Yakima. Carl was born on April 3, 1902 in Ellensburg, Wash., the son of Harvey an Martha (Grewell) McEwen. Mr. McEwen attended schools in Toppenish, coming to the Valley in 1910. He worked for the Wheeler Electric Co. until 1936 at which time he joined the Yakima Sheriff's Department and worked for the County until 1939. After leaving the Sheriff's Department he went to work for Wheeler Electric again and moved to Seattle, where he worked for the Boeing Company and also Todd Shipyards. After working at Todd Shipyards he went to work for himself as a general electrical contractor. Mr. McEwen returned to the Valley in 1952 and worked for the U & I Sugar Co. as an electrician until 1958. On August 29, 1958 he married Myrtle Ranes in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. In 1959 Mr. McEwen went to work at Hanford as an electrician, until retiring in 1972. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 2229 of Toppenish, a member of the American Legion of Toppenish, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers & Building and Trade Unions. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle of Toppenish; three grandsons, Donald McEwen of North Bend, Wash., Billy McEwen, Tommy McEwen of Joplin, Mo.; two granddaughters, Ms. Patricia Curtis of Eugene, Ore., Mrs. Donna Moore of San Diego, Calif., a daughter-in-law, Margaret McEwen of North Bend, Wash. He was preceded in death by three sons, also by four brothers, three sisters, and his mother and father. Funeral services for Carl McEwen will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 3, 1988 in the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Toppenish. Burial and concluding services will be held in the Elmwood Cemetery in Toppenish. The family suggests for those who wish to make donations, may make them to the American Cancer Society.
