BRAS Alexander Squires, along with his father, Charles, was a general contractor in Lewis County during the first half of the 20th century. Charles, along with his wife Jessie and four sons, moved from Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1888 to the Northwest and settled on the North Fork of the Newaukum River. Alexander built many major buildings throughout the county. Alexander Squires married Anna Baker on Nov. 21, 1883, in Chehalis. Anna was born on Feb. 25, 1882, in Somerset, Pa. She moved to Littell, just west of Chehalis, in 1908. They were married in 1910 in Chehalis and had three daughters: Thelma Anna (1910), Jessie Matilda (1912) and Cleona Elizabeth (1920). Alex died on Oct. 22, 1945, and Anna died on Oct. 18, 1960, both in Chehalis. Alex's contracting business included such major structures as the large (now gone) Greyhound building at the corner of Market St. and National Ave. in Chehalis, the Lewis County Public Utilities District building in Chehalis, several Chehalis commercial buildings, the Montgomery Ward building in Chehalis and the Mossyrock School. When the Great Depression slowed construction activity, Alex bought and operated Lilligard Hardware in Chehalis. The depression over, he resumed building activities. Thelma Squires had two daughters: Mary Lou Salliger, born on April 8, 1926, in Chehalis, and Donna Killeen. Mary Lou married Charles Stevenson of The Dallas, Ore., in Chehalis and they had three children: Jill, Jan and Jeff. Mary Lou died on March 27, 2003, in Newbury Park, Calif. Thelma died on Oct. 9, 1983, in Seattle. Jessie Squires married John B. Edinger of Centralia, Wash., on Sept. 15, 1937, in Chehalis, Wash. They had four children: John B. Jr., born on Oct. 16, 1938, in Centralia; Richard Squires, born on Aug. 19, 1940, in Centralia; Jean Marie, born on Dec. 1, 1943, in Chehalis, and Carol Ann, born on March 19, 1945, in Centralia. John B. Sr. married Betty McNeely Olson in 1964. John died on July 19, 1986, in Olympia, Wash. Jessie died on March 4, 2000, in Bellingham, Wash. Cleon Squires married Ray Useldinger in Chehalis. They had four daughers: Alix, Paula, Debbie and Lynn. There are no remaining members of the Squires family living in Lewis County.
