"SWEDE" FRIEND. A lifetime resident of Centralia, Carroll J. "Swede" Friend, 70, died in Centralia General Hospital Friday, June 24. A retired truck driver, Friend was born on September 28, 1912 in Centralia. He had been a long-time employee of Hub City Transfer and Cardinal Doors of Centralia. Survivors include his wife, Vivian D., at home; two daughters, Jan Friend of Tacoma and Jill Watson of Trotwood, Ohio; two sons, Greg Friend of Portland and Jeff Friend of Centralia; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; a brother, C. Byrd Friend of Centralia; a sister, Phoebe Martina of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews. By request of Friend no services will be held. Cremation will take place in Olympia. Rememberances may be donations to the American Heart Association of Washington. Arrangements were made under the direction of Newell-Hoering's Mortuary of Centralia. Additional Comments: WIFE: Vivian Margaret DWYER (1912-2003), married June 03, 1939. PARENTS: Charles William FRIEND (1871-1942) and Augusta "Gussie" SWANSON (born "SVENSSON")(1875-1965). Charles immigrated from Bitton, Gloucester, England in 1880, and Gussie immigrated from Kristianstad County, Sweden in 1889. SIBLINGS: Roy William FRIEND (1897-1918); Wilbert Coster FRIEND (1899-1981); Phoebe Irene FRIEND MARTINA (1902-1987); and Charles Byrd FRIEND (1916-2001). ADDITIONAL INFO ABOUT CARROLL: Carroll was an infielder and pitcher who was drafted to play baseball with the Aberdeen Black Cats. According to the Centralia Daily Chronicle (6-7-1934), Carroll "Swede" Friend was let go with some other players because they cost the club too much. He pitched for the Olympia team in 1935.
