The Tokeland Hotel has acquired registration as an Historic Place. The building began its life as a pool hall near the dock, later a tavern. The building was moved to its present location by William DIBKEY and Frederick LANDRY where it was to become a club house for the Kindred Hotel and Golf Course. Although the course was a mere nine holes, the now clubhouse was a nice place for locals and visitors alike to relax. Maud KINDRED opened it up officially on 9 Apr 1933 as a tavern. For many years it remained a tavern, but it later became the Tokeland Inn, then the Tokeland Hotel. The building still is in operation today, and is maintained by the current owners, as is the land. The cemetery of the hotel is not as one would think a cemetery should be.... Case Creek was a small creek running off of Cedar River. At some point, unknown to me, the river washed out, flooding Case Creek and the little cemetery there. For years two tombstones lay on a hillside until a hunter came across them while out duck hunting. Daniel CATINO, a resident of Tokeland, and his friend Frederick SHIPMAN, decided to bring the stones to the slough near the tavern. For a long time the stones remained there until someone had the idea of bringing the stones into the building and setting them next to the fireplace. Both tombstones bear the names of kin to Maud and Elizabeth KINDRED.
