Shurre@aol.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- OLD SETTLER (Gravelly Lake, Pioneer) CEMETERY LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON T19N R2E Section 10 Established About 1855 Taking I-5 south, exit on 124, stay right,go through thr light, staying on Gravelly Lake Drive untill you get to the 2nd light, which is Washington Blvd., turn left and head down Washington and you will see the cemetery on your right hand side. This cemetery was donated by Mr. Frank Clark for free burial for Pioneers Only of the area and their descendents. It is maintained by the county and there appear to be no known records of old burials, so walking the site is mandatory if looking for a particular stone. I suspect there are many stones lost due to years of trampling horses, etc., before the county took control and fenced it off. PLEASE NOTE: In April 2001 an old newspaper article came to light which added to the known early history of this cemetery and added several names to the burial list. This article, published November 23, 1876 in the Puget Sound Express of Steilacoom by editor Julius Dickens, shows clearly that the cemetery had been in use for many years at that time and had already fallen into an abandoned state. None of the burials shown in this article show up on any record or modern burial list of this cemetery. The article and burial list is excerpted at the bottom of this page, following the modern burial list. Even in 1876, it was clear that there were numerous unmarked graves, and many more burials were undoubtedly made after 1876 but before the modern records begin around 1900. 1. Robert L. Perlia Jean Saunder Wilcox 1847-1916 ________________________________________________________________________ Puget Sound Express, Julius DICKENS, Editor November 23, 1876 Our citizens have evinced a remarkable dereliction in their neglect of the grave-yards in the neighborhood of Steilacoom. The one near the Hospital for the Insane, commonly known as the Garrison Cemetery, is enclosed by a picket-fence, but it is a broken-down, dilapidated, forbidden structure, through which cattle can enter at various places. Wild trees and brush hide the graves and monuments in the yard, and dry branches and tree-tops are scattered over the grounds, rendering it almost impossible to wander about from one side of the sacred place to the other. The grave-yard near Gravelly Lake is in as bad a condition, lacking enclosure, besides. Here cattle, sheep and hogs may be seen at any time feeding on the graves and uprooting the ground. Now, we suggest that for the credit of the good name of our town, our people subscribe money enough to have a fence built around the grave-yard at Gravelly Lake, to repair the one surrounding the Garrison Cemetery, and to give a general cleaning-up to both. Half-a-dollar, dollar or two from each of our citizens will pay for the work and material. We are also of opinion it would come within the province of our members of the Legislature to memorialize Congress for aid in the preservation of the graves of the soldiers at the Garrison Cemetery, and to erect to them suitable monuments. We have visited the two grave-yards and below present, as near as type can make it, a list of inscriptions as we found them, in order to preserve, for future reference, names, etc., of the deceased. In the Garrison Cemetery six graves are marked by ever-lasting marble-slabs or monuments, while the graveyard at Gravelly Lake has only one grave thus distinguished. The remainder are marked by wooden slabs, and many a mound is thrown up without the least mark to inform the visitor of the name or age of the departed. Some very ignorant artists painted the headboards for many of the graves, as may be noticed by inspecting the list we give below. We have arranged the list in alphabetical order. The following we find at the GRAVE-YARD AT GRAVELLY LAKE: To the memory of A. G. BALCH, who died Dec. the 28th, A. D. 1862. Aged 35 years. To the memory of Mrs. Emiline BATES. Died June the 26th, A. D. 1861, Aged 16 years & 1 month. Died June the 12th, A. D. 1861, Ernest BATES, Aged 3 months & 30 days. Sacred to the memory of D. W. O. DAVISSON, Born in Pickaway Co., Ohio, April 7, 1832, Died Nov. 11, 1874. C. Broderick, son of S. C. and H. L. MITCHELL, Died Jan. 26, 1863, Aged 6 months. Memory of J. K. PRESSLEY. Died Feb. 17, 1865, Aged 22 years. Native of Trescot, Maine. To the memory of Thomas RAFFERTY, who Died November the 27th, A. D. 1860. Aged 29 years. To the memory of Catharine, wife of Robert THOMPSON, who died Oct. the 27th, A. D. 1862, Aged 22 years. 1 month & 25 days. To the memory of Catharine WHEELER. Died Oct. 10th, 1866, Aged 65 years. __________________________________________________________________________
