WA. Friday November 1, 1918 Page 17 Column 5 CALKINS HEAD OF MILWAUKEE ROAD Seattle, Nov 1- R.M. CALKINS, Seattle, former Vice President of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railway was elected president of that road with all its subsidiary lines, by the board of directors in New York yesterday, according to press dispatches received last night. Mr. Calkins left New York Thursday night for Chicago, where he will make his headquarters and will enter upon the duties of his position as the head of the system Friday. Mrs. Calkins is in Seattle where she has been since September. Mr. Calkins a resident of Seattle for nine years, was appointed vicep resident in charge of traffic, with headquarters in Chicago, on December 3, 1917, entering on the duties of the office January 1, 1918. He served until August 12, when owing to business investments that required his presence at his Seattle home, he tendered his resignation, at that time fully determined to enter commerical life. He arrived here in September and established offices with his son, R. M. CALKINS JR., in the Henry building, responding to request of members of the board of directors to resume railroad life as the excutive head of the company. After holding the offer under advisement for two weeks, he went to New York for a conference.
