Mrs. Henry Royce and daughter of Tacoma and Mrs. Royce of Chicago, mother of Henry Royce, were visiting Mr. Royce, Tuesday, at the Royce mill, near Eatonville. Mrs. Royce, Sr., will leave for Chicago, Sunday. Fred Guske has quit the Powell & Poole logging camp, near Alder. Mrs. Roy Wenk left Wednesday for Chicago, where she will meet Mr. Wenk. Congressman Albert Johnson was campaigning on the T & E line, Tuesday. He met with a very enthusiastic meeting, everywhere. Judge Ernest M. Card was an Eatonville visitor last Friday. Card Candidate for re-election as Superior Court Judge. - picture HE FIGHTS FOR OPEN SHOP - picture Evidence continues to multiply that the candidacy of Roland H. Hartley for the republican nomination for governor has assumed national prominence. In a recent issue, Leslie's Weekly published a portrait of Col. Hartley and referred to him as a man who has the courage of his convictions. Sept 1 the New York Times published a long article reviewing Col. Hartley's campaign against the right of the labor agitator to dictate to any workingman that he would engage in any particular occupation unless he were a member of the union. Etc. ELIHU F. BARKER FOR SUPREME COURT Elihu F. Barker, candidate for Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington, is 49 years of age, and has been actively engaged in the practice of law for twenty-six years. He is a graduate of the Central Normal College of Danville, Indiana having taken both the classical and law courses of that institution. Etc. Richard Canty of Eatonville, met Mr. Barker at the last state convention of the Redmen at Seattle and he says that Mr. Barker is a splendid man and scholar, a man of attainments. Mr. Barker is also a member of the Masonic fraternity. CLEAR LAKE NEWS Miss Minnie Jensen called at Conrad's. Tuesday Dewey Fredericksen, Alfred Brewer and the Misses Cora and Florence Golden, of this vicinity, are attending high school at Eatonville. Minnie Conrad made a trip to Eatonville, Monday. Miss Emily Fredericksen spent the week end at Eatonville as the guest of Ella Kittelman. Mr. W. H. Stidham is camping at the Mountain. Mrs. G. V. Golden called at Cedar Grove, Sunday evening. Miss Clara Fredericksen spent the latter part of the week at Eatonville with her sister, Mrs. Larry Smith. Louis F. Hart, Lieutenant Governor of the State was in Eatonville today in his campaign for re-election. He has some opposition but he is sure to get a good vote in pierce County. The Senate over which he presides says that he is an able presiding officer. THE ZEPPELIN Mrs. Scurlock has moved her family to Eatonville to attend the schools at this place. The family occupies the rooms in the upper story of the building which souses the Eatonville Dispatch. As the editor was filling a gasoline tank the other day, Mrs. Scurlock rushed out to where he was engaged in this task and asked if the building was on fire. The editor was merely in a hurry. Still Fred Hotes insists that Alder is a live town. Rev. Reese made this office a pleasant call the other day and while here remarked that he had seen a picture in a magazine showing an ape running a linotype machine. The Rev. assured the editor that he hardly believed it. This was after the editor had explained that he run his own linotype. We believe it quit possible. CAPT. HOWELLS Capt. I. M. Howell, secretary of state for Washington, is a candidate for re-nomination and re-election to that office. In his announcement the Captain says, "I have been a resident of Washington for 39 years coming to the Territory from Iowa in 1887. Am a married man and the proud father of a native son of Washington. Etc. GUY E. KELLEY The friends of Guy E. Kelly, who is a candidate to succeed himself in this district, feel that he should be returned for a second term. There are two members to be elected from this district. In the last session Mr. Kelly was one of the leaders in the House, notwithstanding it was his first term. Etc. FRED G. REMANN prosecuting attorney of Pierce County and candidate for re-election. He will be re-nominated by a large majority. - picture Mr. John Galbraith and son are spending the week in Tacoma. Mrs. Geiger had as her guests, Wednesday, Mrs. Arthur Gardner, Mrs. H. E. O'Neal, and daughter, Kathlyn, Mrs. Frudenfeld and daughter Mildred, all of Tacoma. Mr. Andrew Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Geiger, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Jacobs and Miss Hazel VanBevers, spent Saturday night and Sunday at the Mountain. The Ladies of the Pocahontas of Eatonville gave a hard times social at the Redman hall, last Monday night and about 100 people attended. The affair was pronounced a success, financially and socially. The prize for the best costume was won by Orrin Kincaid and the waltz prize was won by Harry Steere and Mrs. J. E. Fales. The prize for the poorest dancers was won by Alvero Sandmire and Jeff Peterson. They received a grater. NOTICE All parties trespassing and molesting the property and fruits on T. C. VanEaton ranch, leased by D. W. Amrine are known and if such petty thieving and trespassing isn't stopped at once, I will take such steps as are necessary to stop same regardless of sex or age. D. W. Amrine. Rev. Reese of the Eatonville M. E. Church has returned from Tacoma, much improved in health. He underwent two operations at a hospital while in Tacoma. Johnson, who has made her home with her sister, Mrs. Emil for the summer, went to Seattle, Friday, to meet her husband who just returned from the Orient. She was accompanied by Edith and Lawrence Emil. Mr. Wm. Emil visited over Sunday in Seattle with his mother and brought the children home with him Monday. Judd Phelps made a business trip to Morton, Monday. Mrs. I. Q. Freese of Alder was the guest of Mrs. A. Butler, Tuesday. Mrs. W. J. Ellis who recently came to National from Puyallup has taken a number of pupils for piano and art lessons. The family of George Norwood has moved to National from Eatonville. Sam Cook and family moved to Tacoma, Saturday, where they will reside for the present. Ford Phelps is erecting a house across the road from M. Monsen and will move his family here from Elbe as soon as it is completed. Misses Margaret and Gertrude Greebe of Tacoma have been the guests of Miss Effie Ransweiler the past week. Mrs. E. M. Shaeffer returned Friday, from a vacation of ten days spent in Seattle, visiting friends. The Pacific national Lumber Co. is erecting a number of houses for the employees who wish to move their families here. The fire works which were sent up from the summit of the Mountain were not visible from National. OHOP VALLEY NEWS Mrs. Oscar Magnuson of Enumclaw and Mrs. Robert Potter of Eatonville, visited friends in the Valley a few days last week. The Ohop Ladies Aid met at the home of Mrs. Paul Nelson, Wednesday. Twenty ladies were present. The Ohop young folks serenaded Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Taylor, Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. King. A good time was enjoyed by all in playing games and music until midnight when the party broke up, wishing the happy couple much happiness and success thru life. Mrs. J. Malm entertained at dinner, Friday, Mrs. Oscar Magnuson, Mrs. Robert Potter, Margaret Potter, Harvey Magnuson, Gertrude Woodney and Ida Anderson. Mr. Andrew Teleson of Tacoma has been spending a few days at Mr. P. Peterson's. Andrew Anderson went to Tacoma, Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. McTee, Mrs. Nurse and Mrs. K. LaChappele and Joe Newhouse motored to Tacoma, Saturday night, to see "The Birth of a Nation". Jerry Ward spent Sunday in Tacoma. Mrs. L. Fowler and daughter Estell, returned last week after spending the summer in the east. Mrs. J. W. Strubble, who had been visiting Mrs. R. C. Carter returned to Elma, Sunday. Congressman Albert Johnson passed through mineral, Tuesday. Mr. Peterson and son Dale, Audrey Crane, Mrs. R. Matthews and Mr. Thompson motored from Elma, Saturday, returning Monday accompanied by Mr. R. Matthews who will take a months vacation. Mr. Thompson will take charge of the mill while Mr. Matthews is absent. On Tuesday of this week, Victor G. Rowe, commenced a nine month school at Owens, in Consolidated District no. 214, of Lewis County. Mr. Rowe, very successfully, taught the same school last year. TIDEWATER NEWS Miss Vera martin and Miss jean McKenzie of Tacoma spent the week end with Mrs. Marshall Harris, at Rocky Point. Mrs. Otto Swanson entertained Mrs. H. Londreen and Mrs. Carlson of Tacoma, Sunday. Mrs. Frank Potts and son spent Wednesday in Tacoma. Mrs. A. E. Gustafson spent the week end with friends in Tacoma. Mrs. Anna Piggott of Tacoma is spending a few days with her mother, Mrs. Kronquist. Mrs. Raysbrook and daughter Erma, called on Mrs. Harris. Mrs. B. Trebert and Magna Jacobson motored to Orting. ELBE NEWS NOTES The Ladies Literary Society met at the home of Mrs. Albert Cook, Wednesday afternoon. School opened Tuesday morning with a good attendance. Mr. Bramlett as principal, Mrs. Bradbury, intermediate and Mrs. Engel, primary grade. Mrs. Hill from Park Junction attended the Ladies Literary Society Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Borden and family spent Saturday and Sunday in Tacoma. Mrs. Winters and Mrs. Laura Maze spent Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Sachs. Mr. Whitney purchased a cow in Eatonville, Sunday. Mrs. Theissen called on Mrs. Engel, Monday afternoon. NEWS FROM ALDER Miss Anna Lorenz left for Chehalis, Tuesday, where she will attend high school. Miss Margaret Hotes is attending high school in Seattle. Bert Parks was in Eatonville, Thursday. Mrs. James O'Day has been visiting her daughter in Tacoma, for a few days. Mrs. Geo. W. Tatro was in Seattle the last of the week. Mr. Jim Moore was in Eatonville, Thursday. Mrs. Woodard Parsons has been at Camp 17, Ashford for a few days. Mrs. Andrew Fife and children were guests of Mrs. E. Boettcher, Thursday. Messrs. Wm. Kellogg, Oscar Young and Ollie Parnell made a trip East o the mountains, last week in Mr. Parnell's machine. Mr. Fred Berry who has been in Ketchican, Alaska for several months, arrive home Tuesday. Mesdames, W. Kellogg, Fred Duke, F. Shepard, I. Freese and Misses Mary Kellogg and Mae Stewart were guests of Mrs. Geo. Scurlock at lunch, Friday afternoon. Mr. Herman Kruse motored to Tacoma, Friday. Chas. Holmes of Pleasant Valley has been the guest of Herman Wykerly for a few days. Rev. Carl Kilian of Puyallup was the guest of Mr. C. Boettcher, over Sunday. Mrs. F. J. Hotes and little daughter, Juvernia, returned home, Sunday, from East of the mountains, where they have been visiting relatives. Mrs. Ernest Boettcher and Miss Mollie Miller were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Tatro, Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Kopta were visitors in Alder, last Sunday after an absence of over eight years. Mr. Kopta was yard foreman for the Excelsior Lumber Co. which operated a saw mill here at that time. Mr. and Mrs. William Kellogg went to Tacoma, Wednesday to look at some city property. MINERAL NEWS Mr. J. Q. Adamy made a business trip to Morton, Monday. Mrs. C. F. Gilbert Jr. and children, returned to their home in Tacoma, after spending several days visiting relatives here. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Wheeler and son Wells, Mr. and Mrs. B. Anthony autoed up to the mountain, Saturday, returning home, Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. W. Dean entertained Mr. and Mrs. Stewart at cards, Monday evening. Miss Francis Reedy left on Monday for her school at Edison, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. L. I. Walrath, Mrs. Mattie Osburn, Mrs. L. B. Pankey and Mrs. Milligan of Seattle, spent Tuesday at the Mountain. Arvilla Ada Sallstrom entertained several of her little friends Tuesday, in honor of her fifth birthday. Those present were, Phyllis Dean, Thelma Naslund, Verna Toles, Herbert Adamy, Dorothy Mitchell, Helen Wood, Eleanor Peterson, Leona McStott, Harold Wood, Chester Peterson, Helen Carter, Stella McStott, Hester Wright, marguerite Miller, Catherine Trim, Mamie Johnson. Lawrence McQueen left for Seattle, Saturday. Mrs. Lillian Kuney of Oelwein, Iowa and Mrs. Anna Shepard of Davenport, Wash., visited at the L. I. Walrath home, last week. Miss Holmes of Seattle and Miss Muller of Cheney, Wash., arrived Saturday, to take up their duties at school work. Mr. and Mrs. V. Gilbert left Saturday, for Everett, to visit the latter's mother, Mrs. Gilbert will continue her visit for a week. Mrs. Chappel has opened a restaurant and bakery here.
