Young Stubbs Acquitted of the Murder of F.C.Vandiver
Tacoma,Sept.16-(Special)- Shortly after 5 o'clock tonight Fred R.Stubbs heard 
the jury pronounce him not guilty of the crime of murdering F.C.Vandiver at 
the American Lake encampment,July 9. A few moments later,free to go where he 
pleased,for the firt time since the day of the shooting,and a lad message was 
speeding over the wires to hsi friends in Tennessee.The accused soldier had 
spent an anxoius four hours while the jury was deliberating on the chances of 
death or imprisonment for him,and he scanned each face wistfully as they filed 
out of the little room wistfully as they filed out of the little room where 
the decision had been made.
As soon as the verdict was read Stubbs shook hands with the jurymen and 
everyone else in the courtroom that he could reach,and the brothers followed 
his example.Returning to his cell he had occupied for so many weeks,Stubbs 
secured what few belongings he had there,and he was then borne away by a crowd 
of his comrades to the Massasoit Hotel for his general jubilation.
On the first ballot nine jurymen voted for acquittal and three for 
conviction.No change was made by the second ballot,but the third showed ten 
for acquittal,one blank and one for conviction. Thus it stood until the eighth 
ballot,when the solitary vote for conviction was absorbed and the vote for 
acquittal made unanimous.
