His failure to come home for dinner alarmed his wife and she phoned to neighbors,C.Johnson finding the body. The officers at Vancouver were at once notified, and upon their arrival at the scene an inquest was held and a verdict that deceased came to his death from a gunshot wound inflicted by his own hand was returned by the jury. Spires was 48 years of age and leaves a wife and six children, besides three sister and three brothers as follows: Mrs.Olive Fair of Manor,Wash.; Mrs. R.Buchanan of Vancouver; Mrs. A.Dennis of Portland; Oscar Spires of Hockinson;Fred Spires of Lebanon,Ore.; and Edward Spires of Ashland,Ore. He was a native of Illinois. He had retained ex Prosecuting Attorney L.M.Burnett to defend him. Spires, it will be remembered, surrendured to Coronor Limber at Sifton, and maintained that he had shot in self defence. He claimed that Larson, upon being asked what he was doing, replied that he was "looking for such fellows as you" following this remark with a motion as if to draw a gun. Spires claimed that he then drew his gun and fired three times, the first striking Larson in the breast and the others in the side and back.
