Starr pstarr20@mchsi.com February 17, 2006, 4:01 pm Family newspaper clipping (probably "Arlington Times") Mrs. Ida Handley Passes Wednesday Mrs. Ida Regenia Handley, aged 85 years, 2 months, 14 days, a highly respected pioneer resident of Arlington and an 1890 Big Burn homesteader, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Verd on West Ave., Wednesday evening March 29th. In the heyday of her life Mrs. Handley was intensively active in social life of this community. In 1892 she was elected and served as school director of District No. 16. It was during this period that Arlington’s first school, the Garfield, was built. She was a faithful worker in the W.C.T.U and church, taking an active interest in establishing Arlington’s first church, the Old Free Methodist Church, which was first organized as a community church. Later she became a charter member of the local Congregational church, an early member of Chapter I, P. E. O. and the first president of the Degree of Honor. Mrs. Handley was born in Branch County, Michigan, January 15, 1859, being the daughter of William Henry and Margaret Vincent Harris. At the age of 17 she was married to Andrew Stephens. From this union Ethel Irene Stephens was born. In 1888 she was again married to William Andrew Handley, with whom she lived to celebrate their golden wedding, he preceding her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ethel I. Verd; three granddaughters, Miss Ruth Verd, Mrs. Naomi Raginia Reid, Mrs. Helen Phebe Starr; one grandson, Lieut. Comdr. Paul Harris Verd and five great-grandchildren. Services will be at the Congregational Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1st , the Rev. Thomas Gordon officiating. Interment will be in the family plot at the local cemetery.
