Under The Wheels

Horrible Accident at the Depot

Early this Saturday morning a man was discovered dead under the wheel of a
freight car directly in front of the passenger depot in this place.  He had been
struck in front of the warehouse late Friday night by a freight train that had
side-tracked to allow the passenger [train] going west to pass.  His neck was
caught under the wheel and the body dragged a distance of 100 yards.  Strange to
say, the car did not pass over the neck.  The body lay exposed to view for
several hours, when Justice of the Peace S.G. Whitman, in the absence of the
Coroner, had the remains removed to the warehouse and an inquest held.  The man
proved to be Mike O'Donnell, aged about 55 years old, who is an old timer in
these parts.  He was a man of dissipated habits and although having a most
excellent family at Cheney has not contributed to their support for two or three
years.  He was seen intoxicated Friday night, and it is supposed that in
attempting to pass between the cars he was knocked down with the result so
stated.  A jury composed of Geo. A. Davis, W.E. Pierce, J.G. Dow, C.R. Peebles,
W.H. Darknell and D. Ravenscroft was impanelled, and they brought in a verdict
of accidental death, exonerating the railroad employees from all blame.  The
injuries consisted of a frightful mutilation of the head, chest, back, arm and
leg.  The wounds in the skull and chest were sufficient to produce instant
death.  Dr. J Whethan made an examination of the corpse and explained to the
jury the nature and extent of the hurts.  A Mr. French of Cheney telegraphed for
O'Donnell's family, who are expected to arrive and take charge of the body today.
