Robert Ballard, 87, a longtime physician who resided in Hoquiam, Washington passed away on February 12th, 2006 at a care facility in Olympia, Washington. He was born May 20th, 1918 in Cordova, Alaska to Howard F. and Helen A (Dever) Ballard. Following several childhood years in Seattle, he moved to Longview, Washington, graduating from R.A. Long High School in 1936. In his senior year he placed 1st in the 880 yard event winning the Gold Medal. Recently he donated his medal to R.A. Long High School to be a permanent part of their trophy collection. Dr. Ballard received his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington in 1940 and remained an avid Husky fan all his life. He attended the University of Oregon Medical School in Portland (now OHSU), followed by an internship at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, acquiring his medical degree in 1944. From 1945 to 1946 he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp, serving in the Central Pacific and Korea. He was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Marian; former wife, Florence (Kitt) Ballard and children Katherine, Michael, Patrick and David. He is survived by daughter, Susan Ballard of Toledo; Ronald Ballard of Seattle; step- daughters Maureen Thomas of Edmonds; Eva (Paul) Culwell of Issaquah; Mary Ann (Dave) Palmer of Cosmopolis; step-son Mervyn (Louise) Thomas of Aberdeen; sisters Mary Jane Anderson, San Louis Obispo, California; Nancy (Dean) Dewitt, Mesa, Arisona; brother Ronald D. (Loretta) Ballard of Edmonds, Washington; Step-sister, Sharon (Chuck) Mertsching of Longview. A private inurnment was held at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen.
