He had relieved the elevator boy during lunch hour and stopped the cage a few feet from the floor in order to go beneath. The cage was either inaccurately checked or Horton released it in an attempt to raise it from below, and it descended upon head, crushing it between the shoulders killing him instantly. He was not discovered till the boy, on returning, saw a hand and arm sticking up by the door. The man's wife and daughter were in the building and were agonized spectators of the efforts to get the crushed, bruised and bleeding mass from the well. Horton was a cousin of Dexter and Julius Horton,wealthy pioneers, and a half cousin of Cornoer Horton, whose painful duty it became to investigate the cause of his death.
