Over the following thirteen years he lived in Philadelphia, PA, Corpus Christi, TX, San Diego, CA, and Portsmouth, VA before taking permanent residence on Mercer Island in the Puget Sound area. Following graduation from Mercer Island High School in 1969, Tom attended and graduated from the University of Washington with an undergraduate degree in Botany, and his Doctor of Medicine in 1977. Three years later he completed his training and Certification as an Anesthesiologist. Tom practiced for several years at St. John Hospital in Longview before retiring. Tom was an active sportsman, deeply involved in the outdoor world which was his passion. He loved skiing, hiking, and mountain and rock climbing. He summited Mt. Rainier numerous times. Tom loved white water rafting, canoeing and saltwater kayaking. He loved to take his family & friends down the Columbia River in his kayak. He was a fisherman and forester and took many fishing trips with his son Zac. As a young man, he spent his summers during Medical School as a Park Ranger in Yellowstone National Park. Tom built a beautiful log home in Kelso and tended the surrounding forest for many years. Tom and Ellen married in 1991. He helped raise his step children Nate, Kali and Paige. The family shared vacations, camping, hiking, fishing and numerous trips to Yellowstone and Arizona. Tom and Ellen also worked together to complete the log home and the endless chores of their home life; from chopping wood to gardening. Tom and his family lived in Gallup, Albuquerque, and Grants, NM where his spiritual interest in the Navajo people led him to study and speak the Navajo language. He practiced yoga extensively over the last several years, becoming a Certified Yoga Instructor. He was an avid traveler. He visited Europe numerous times including trips to Turkey, Peru and all over the United States. Above all, Tom was a family man, he deeply loved his wife Ellen, sons Zac, Brian and Nathan and daughters Miah, Kali and Paige. He devoted himself most especially to his four year old twins Miah and Brian. All that knew Tom felt his love and acceptance and will sorely miss his gentle smile, peaceful spirit and affectionate embrace. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Fay Anthony (O'Connor) Montgomery. Survivors include: Wife Ellen at home, son Zachariah of Yakima, twins Brian and Miah at home and Nathan, Kali and Page Gerhman of Kelso. He is also survived by his father Duncan Otis Montgomery and step-mother Ayako Montgomery of Monroe, WA. He is also survived by brothers Patrick Montgomery of Victoria, TX, Timothy Montgomery of Mt. Vernon, WA and Mark Montgomery of Waitsberg, WA; sisters Mary McGuire of Easton, PA and Barbara Hotaling of Dubois, WY and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at the Calvary Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. with Chaplain Steve White officiating. Concluding service, an Internment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
