She was born June Irene Elder to Alice Elizabeth (McAnally) and Bert Elder on July 7, 1918 in Boicourt, Kansas and raised in Missouri where her father leased and farmed land. When brothers Bill and Frank, with their families, left Missouri for Washington state, June went along. She worked in the fruit orchards which allowed her to save enough money to buy a bus ticket for her fiancé, Orlie Reed who had remained in Missouri. They were married in Ellensburg, WA in 1937, and lived and worked in the Yakima Valley until 1942 when they moved to Kelso, Washington. After her children were grown June worked for over six years at Kelso's Tobiason's variety store, a job she thoroughly enjoyed and quit only when the store closed. She enjoyed gardening, canning green beans, pickles, jams, jellies and many other things she learned to do growing up. She truly loved sewing, becoming an outstanding seamstress, making clothes for her daughter and herself. She created beautiful quilts, afghans, and crocheted an uncounted number of lovely pieces. She also occupied what time she had sewing clothes for children's dolls. June was a member and past post president of the Kelso Eagle Auxiliary #1555, a REAC member, and served on Kelso's local election board for many years. June's first husband, Orlie, died in 1994 after 56 years of marriage. She married again in 1995 and lost her second husband, Lloyd Reed, after just three months. She lived in the same Kelso neighborhood for more than 60 years. She had been one of a large number of young brides at the time who remained close to each other throughout the passing years. June was preceded in death by three sisters, five brothers, one daughter, and one son. She is survived by daughter, Wanda McCaine (Richard), beloved daughter-in-law, Mona Reed; grandchildren Diana Johnson, Darren Reed, Debra Hamilton (James), James Laulainen, Warren Laulainen (Caren); great grandchildren, Bradley, Tommy, Danielle, Dustin, Brandon, Corrin, Trevor, Cody, Sean, Christine, Sarah June and numerous, much beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held March 11, Saturday, 1:00pm at Longview Memorial Park in the Steele Chapel. Friends may offer their respects Friday, March 10 from 9:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday, March 11 from 9:00am – 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in June's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10001.
