Millard "Doyle" Slape of Rainier, Oregon passed away October 27, 2005 at his residence at the age of 85. He was born April 21, 1920 in Alpena Pass, Arkansas to parents Robert Millard and Jessie Pearl (Barkley) Slape. Doyle married Betty Jane Lempke August 8, 1942 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. She survives him at the family home in Rainier. Doyle received his education in Arkansas. Doyle was a veteran of World War II U.S. Army Air Corps and after coming home from the war moved from his home in Arkansas to Washington…First Eastern Washington and later moved to Longview, Washington where he lived for several years and logged with a team of horses. They moved to Woodland and lived there from the early 1950's until around 1962 when they moved back to the Longview area. He went on to work in various mills in the area, owned his own gas station and freelanced as a timber buyer for the mills. He had a dredge on the Cowlitz River until 1979. In his later years he had a consignment company for equipment, in Rainier, Oregon. He ran a caterpillar in the logging industry, drove his own log truck and worked at the Port Dock running the cranes that loaded the ships. He was always available when someone needed a hand or equipment needed to be moved or to help anyway that he could. In 1969 he brought his family to Rainier, Oregon where he has lived on a farm until his death. He loved raising cattle and always had chickens and other livestock around his home and on his farms. He enjoyed his children and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a joy in his life. He was the leader of his family and the first person everyone went to when there was a problem. His place will never be filled, and he will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Slape. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Slape of Rainier, Oregon; four sons, Richard Slape, Max Slape, and John Slape, all of Rainier; Ray Slape of Longview, Washington; three daughters, Carol Maddox of Arizona City, Arizona, Arlene Daniels of Rainier, Oregon, and Eleanor Hanson of Clatskanie, Oregon; two brothers, Joe Slape of Centralia, Washington and Wade Slape of Kennewick, Washington; sister, Dee Slape of Wenatchee, Washington; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and "special children" who grew up with his children and were a part of their lives. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2005 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary Chapel, 225 SE Third Street, Clatskanie, Oregon. Services will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at Haakinson- Groulx Mortuary Chapel, 225 SE Third Street, Clatskanie with Dennis Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at Green Mountain Cemetery, Rainier, Oregon. There will be a gathering after the service at the Rainier Senior Center from 3:00-5:00pm. Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary of Clatskanie in charge of arrangements.
