She was born the third child to German immigrants Henry Berndt and Amelia (Roller) Berndt on June 25, 1916. She lived her entire life in Castle Rock, graduating from Castle Rock High School in 1934. In May of 1937 she married William R. Strain. Selma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church her entire life and was active in many groups and committees including some 40 years in the choir. She served as secretary on the North Cowlitz County Democratic Club, was a precinct Committeeman for over 20 years, and served on the Election Board for 42 years. She was well known for her skills in knitting and crocheting as well as having a green thumb with vegetables and flowers. She loved to can food, dig clams at the beach, and pick wild mushrooms and blackberries. Her life was centered around her family, church and homemaking. Back in the days of multiple party telephone lines, when talking to her sisters, and eavesdroppers were abundant, the girls would switch to speaking German and continue their chat. The eavesdroppers would soon hang up. Later, telemarketers would suffer the same fate. It was her laugh for the day. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, of 51 years, a sister Agatha, a stillborn brother, a sister, Dorothy, who died as an infant, and a daughter-in-law, Sherri. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Donald R. and Kathy Strain of Castle Rock and Kenneth W. and Nancy Strain of Snohomish, WA; sisters Elsie Hansch, Evelyn Lemonds, Anna Downing and Emma Cooley of Castle Rock; a sister Martha Olson of Graham, WA; brothers Edward and Walter Berndt of Castle Rock; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A private intermittent was held at Tower Cemetery. A memorial service will be held March 25, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Castle Rock. Remembrances are suggested to Hospice and St. Paul's Memorial Fund. Hubbard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
