Friend, of Tono, sustained a broken neck and died instantly Saturday when he was struck by a cable while working at the Mutual Lumber company's camp near Tenino, where he was employed. The remains were removed to the Sticklin parlors. In addition to his parents, the deceased is survived by four children (note: four siblings). The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sticklin parlors, Rev. Henry Van Engelen officiating and interment being in the Mt. View cemetery. Centralia Daily Chronicle, Tuesday, May 21, 1918, pg 8: Funeral of Roy Friend -- The funeral of Ray Friend of Tono, who was killed Saturday in an accident at the Mutual Camp near Tenino, was held this afternoon from the Sticklin parlors in this city. Rev. Henry Van Engelen officiated and interment was in the Mt. View cemetery. The deceased's father, Chas. Friend, is foreman of the Washington Union Coal Company's mines in Tono, which closed this afternoon. Residents of the town attended the funeral en masse, a special train being chartered to bring the Tono people here for the services. Additional Comments: Wife: Katherine Ann OWENS. Parents: Charles William FRIEND and Augusta "Gussie" SWANSON. Siblings: Wilbert Coster FRIEND, Phoebe Irene FRIEND, Carroll John FRIEND, and Charles Byrd FRIEND. NOTE: Tono was a mining town in Thurston County (Centralia, Lewis County was the closest large town) that Charles FRIEND helped establish for the mining company. It was later found that the ore ran under the town and it was dismantled. Tono is now a ghost town with only one or two buildings still standing.
