George Mylett, of Fairfield, Iowa, passed on in his sleep Sunday morning September 25, 2005 at the Jefferson County Living Care Facility. He had resided at the facility less than two weeks before his passing; prior to that he lived on his own in the Wagon Wheel Apartments, 208 S. Court Street, Fairfield. George was born March 1, 1919, in his parent's home in Winnipeg, Canada. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where George grew up. Upon graduation from high school, George entered the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served for five years until the end of World War II. He was primarily stationed in Alaska.Upon leaving the Air Force, George enrolled in Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington where he studied for four years. While attending Gonzaga, George met a beauty named Betty Jeanette Hooper. They soon were married and in 1950 George and Betty moved to Cathlamet, Washington. Together they opened Mylett's Department Store in downtown Cathlamet. George was a beloved pillar of his community where he owned and operated Mylett's Department Store for 50 years, from 1950 to 2000.While failing health, George moved in 2000 to Fairfield, Iowa, to live near his two sons, Greg and Brad. He remained with his family in Fairfield for five years, until his passing. His two sons, Greg and Brad, his daughters-in-law, Janice and Nora, and a granddaughter, Tina, survive him. Several nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States also survive him. He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Betty; his two brothers, Patrick of Vancouver, BC and Commander William J. Mylett Jr. of the Royal Canadian Navy; his father, William and his mother, Louise.
