It must not be confused with the earlier fur trading post of the same name located 30 miles to the west on the Columbia River. The US Army post included all of what is now Fort Walla Walla Park, including the Museum Complex and Veterans Hospital. The soldiers here were involved in some of the most desperate Indian conflicts on the Western frontier including the Battle of Frenchtown, The Battle at Steptoe Butte, Colonel George Wright's Expedition, and the Battle of Whitebird Canyon part of the Nez Perce Indian War with Chief Joseph's Band. Veteran's of these expeditions are buried here along with other personel of the Fort which was decommissioned as an Army base in 1910. The cemetery was also established in 1856, making it one of the Army's earliest western post cemeteries. It is located West of Walla Walla next to the Fort Walla Walla Park and Museum Complex on Myra Road, Sec.31 Twp.7N. R.36E. From Highway 12 exit to 2nd St. Turn right onto Main St.,left at 9th St.,right on Dalles Military Road and right on Myra Road proceeding about 1/4 mile to the entrance. A number of graves were transferred here in the 1890'a and early 1900's upon the closing of several small Army posts in Washington and Idaho, especially Fort Lapwai, from which 80 graves were transferred in 1890. The cemetery was transferred from the Army to the Veterans Administration in 1922, at which time it contained 141 identified burials, although earlier Army records show over 150. Originally recorded by Violet Ries Wells. Information provided by the Fort Walla Walla Museum and from US Army records researched by Kevin Fraley. Transcribed and submitted by Rella Faris Gleaton, July 9,1999. ======================================================================== A large square monument is inscribed: In Memory of Enlisted Men, 1st U.S. Cavalry.
