Both above notices must remain when copied or downloaded. rella@plix.com ======================================================================== WHITMAN MISSION GREAT GRAVE, Waiilatpu, Walla Walla County, WA T7N R35E Section 32 WHITMAN MISSION GREAT GRAVE This famous historical site is located in Walla Walla County about 5 miles West of Walla Walla just South of Highway 12. It is well marked by the National Park Service signs, for the Whitman Mission National Historical Park. The Whitman killings ("Whitman Massacre") on Nov 29 and 30, 1847 was the most noted event here. The victims of the Whitman Killings are buried in what is now called "The Great Grave". The tomb that is seen today was placed there in 1897 on the 50th anniversary of the Whitman killings. It is not clear if all the names listed on the Great Grave stone are actually buried in the grave. Hall, who was mistakenly listed as Jacob D. Hall, escaped Waiilatpu and is thought to have died of drowning in the Columbia River. He definitely is not buried in the Great Grave.
