Burial list of Hay Cemetery transcribed and submitted by Jennifer Perkins(perkjenn@prodigy.net) July 2003. Both above notices must remain when copied or downloaded. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hay Cemetery is Section 22 Twp 145 Range 39 EWM and located on a hill overlooking the town of Hay. The cemetery land was donated by I. M. Curtis and originally called Curtis Cemetery. Over the years, it has gradually been renamed Hay Cemetery because of it's locality. The cemetery was read and transcribed on Sept. 11, 1973 by Wes & Carrie Lartigue, and published in Tombstone Inscriptions Whitman County, Washington, v. 2, published in 1973. At the time it was read and transcribed, the Lartigues were assisted by my Dad, Frank Henley, unofficial sexton of the Cemetery. While there was a cemetery book, no records were maintained. I read the cemetery on July 17, 2003 assisted by my husband, Dave Perkins and daughter, Tara Perkins. The cemetery can be seen from roads entering into Hay. From Hwy. 127 (via Colfax & Dusty), you exit on the Hay Road (Big Alkali Road). This is a paved road, at the entrance to Hay you'll see the cemetery on the hill on your right. As you enter Hay, you cross 2 small wooden bridges, then turn right (Road to LaCrosse), crossing another wooden bridge and Alkali Creek. On your right you'll see a gravel road leading up to the cemetery. The hill is fenced, so the wire gate may be closed, and need to be opened. Drive up the hill to the gated entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery has been better maintained and refurbished in recent years. A small shed,a cross shaped sidewalk and flagpole have been added. Last year drought resistant trees and shrubs were planted around the edge of the cemetery and a new section of white picket fence and gate added. There is a sign, "Hay Cemetery Est. 1899 In Memory of Fay Splater 1922-1961". (Fay Splater is buried at the Selbu Lutheran Church Cemetery, NOT the Hay Cemetery.) When reading the cemetery, I started at the lower left side of the cemetery. The rows are small and mostly in family plots or rows. I have kept the family groupings together. All stones are accessible and fairly easy to read.
