Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: Lilla A. JONES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Adams County Press, Saturday April 2, 1898, Page 5 Column 3 The announcement last Sunday evening of the death of Mrs. Lilla A. JONES, wife of our well-known hardware merchant, N. M. JONES of this place, which occurred at noon on that day at the home of her uncle, Dr. Robert MITCHELL, in Portage, though not unexpected, cast a deep gloom over the entire community in Friendship, where she had so long resided and greatly endeared herself by her gentle ways and lovely womanly character. Mrs. JONES had been an invalid for years. Last December she went to Portage to visit the family of her uncle. A few days after her arrival there she was prostrated by an attack of heart trouble. She recovered somewhat, and was able to be about the most of the time until three or four weeks ago, when the adverse change came that confined her to her bed until time ended and the glories of eternity opened to embrace her gentle spirit. At 8:30 o'clock Tuesday morning brief services were conducted at the MITCHELL residence; then the funeral cortege moved to Briggsville where it arrived at 11 o'clock. The services at Briggsville were held at the M. E. Church and were conducted by Rev. James Bain, who delivered an appreciative and excellent discourse. Lilla A ATWOOD was born March 24, 1830, in Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont. She was a daughter of Darwin and Lydia ATWOOD and came to Wisconsin with her parents when she was one year of age, the family settling in Briggsville, where they lived until about 1856. That year they moved to Trempealeau, returning to Briggsville in 1868. She was married to Norman M. JONES January 14, 1875. Mr. and Mrs. JONES moved to Jackson, Adams county, residing there eight years after which they moved to Friendship where they have since resided. Mrs. JONES was a member of the Congregational church. She will be greatly missed in this community.
