Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: Mercy JONES ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Adams County Press, Volume XXXVII Number 44, Saturday April 14, 1888, Page 4 Mrs. Mercy JONES, aged 88 years, 1 month and 9 days, died in the Town of New Chester, Adams county, Wisconsin, on March 31, 1888. She was born February 22, 1800 in the town of Westmoreland, New Hampshire, and her maiden name was Mercy STREETER. At the age of about 18 years, she was married to Asa H. JONES of Rockingham, Vermont. Here they began the family life; here were born to them ten children, eight of whom are yet living and seven of whom were at her funeral. Here, too, the children began the Christian life--God's word was fundamental in this family's life and his blessing was sought morning and evening at the family altar. In 1851 they came to this county and settled on what was then known as Indian Lands. Here they worked and worshipped for a few years, when the husband and father was called to go over the dark river, leaving the wife and mother to make the last thirty years of earth's pilgramage alone. All that the most tender, filial love could do, was done to sooth her grieved heart. Her children rise up and call her blessed--Proverbs 31:28. On Monday, April 2nd, we gathered for the funeral and burial of Grandmother Jones. Of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, thirty-five were there to take the last look. After a brief but tender service, conducted by her pastor, Rev. P.R. Staples, we laid her mortal body beside that of her husband to await the resurrection of the last day.
