Obituary: Adams County, Wisconsin: Calvin E. REED ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Adams County Press, Saturday May 25, 1895, Page 5 Calvin E. REED, of White Creek, Adams county, Wisconsin, died May 9, 1895, in the 80th year of his age. He had been sick for several months, and for a few weeks his death was feared every day. He was waiting for the call, "having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better." He was born in Berkshire, Massachusetts. When a child his father's family removed to Livingston county, New York, where his marriage to Miss Sarah TWIST occurred December 30, 1837. In 1843 the family came to Wisconsin and purchased a farm near Clinton, Rock county. In 1856 they made their home in White Creek, where Mr. REED was postmaster for many years. He was converted in his fifteenth year and united with the Baptist church in 1838. About this time his father made his home with them, and the family altar was erected and has ever since been kept up. Deacon REED and Mrs. REED were remarkable for their hospitality, especially to ministers of the gospel of all denominations--showing a good example of Christian fellowship. The family consisted of four daughters and one son. The son died a soldier in the 8th Wisconsin, in the late war. The youngest daughter died in her sixth year. The widow and three daughters remain: Mrs. A. J. FISHER of Kilbourn City, Mrs. M. E. AUSTIN and Mrs. S. W. BURGAMAN. The grandchildren were present from Milwaukee and Madison. Every family in White Creek and vicinity was represented at the funeral. The singing at the church and at the grave was worthy of all praise. Short sermons were preached by Father Yocum and Elder Marden.
