SMITH ************************************************************************ Submitted by Joan Benner, May 2005 © All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ************************************************************************ From the Adams County Press, Volume XLVI Number 40, Saturday May 4, 1907, Page 1 Ben L. SMITH died April 27, 1907 of consumption at the home of S. K. RICH in the town of Preston. He was born in 1876 at Ringwood, McHenry County Illinois. When two years of age he moved with his parents to Kansas, where he lived until he was 18, when he moved back to Illinois, where he lived with his grandparents until they died. He was married Dec 25, 1904 to Mary E. RICH of the Town of Preston, this county. Shortly after their marriage the young couple moved to Woodstock, Illinois, where Mr. SMITH had employment in the Oliver Typewriter works. During last summer his health began to fail and upon the advice of his physicians he quit his occupation in the factory and came to his wife's old home for a rest and a change of occupation and climate. For a while he gained in health and had high hopes of regaining his former strength and vigor, but during the winter he took cold which developed into the grip and the dread disease form which he died became firmly fixed. Mr. SMITH is survived by his wife and a little son just a little over a year old, and by his father and mother who live in Kansas, and five brothers and two sisters. His mother came here about five weeks ago and has helped care for her son during his last days. Mr. SMITH was a manly fellow, always cheerful and hopeful. He never had but good to say of anyone. He was a Woodman and many kind words have come from members of the old camp at McHenry, Illinois. The funeral was held Tuesday from the home of his wife's people at Preston, Rev. A. H. Smith of Hancock preaching the sermon. Mr. Smith was called by special request of the sorrowing wife. Just a little over two years ago Rev. Smith had made the happy couple man and wife. A promising young life has gone out and the community joins in heartfelt sympathy with the sorrowing relatives and friends. The interment was in Mount Repose Cemetery.
