R. Van Tassel, who died at his home in the town of Monroe, the town loses one of its oldest and most respected citizens. Mr. Vantassel was born in Kenosha county, Nov. 17, 1843, where he resided with his parents for some time, later moving to White Creek. In 1862 he enlisted in the Civil War, serving for three years. Mr. Vantassel in 1866, married Mahala Sweet in the town of Strongs Prairie. After their marriage they moved to Trempealeau county, where they lived about eight years, then moved back to Adams county, where he resided until his death. He leaves to mourn, his wife, four sons and one daughter, James, William, Bert and Mrs.Ernest Schenk, all of Adams county, and Henry of Wood county; also two brothers and one sister. Mr. Vantassel had been in poor health for a year, but he was not thought to be in danger. Sun. Feb. 11, at 8 o’clock in the evening he was sitting on the bed, when death came suddenly, caused by heart failure and dropsy. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday morning and interment was made in Strongs Prairie cemetery.
